Sherlock Fic Recs

Sherlock/John fics

…ordered by approximate length, short to long.

Disclaimer: I did not write any of these; I’m just madly in love with them.

  1.  Height, or Lack Thereof (~850 words, PG-13): “Sherlock loves that John is so little.”
  2.  L9A1, Thirteen Rounds (1559 words, G): “Today is the day that Sherlock Holmes hits zero.” Major character death but so beautiful.
  3. The Upwards March (~1600 words, G/PG): “Sherlock knows that John’s too good for him and John will leave. One day, John does.” Warning: angstangstangst.
  4. John’s Tea (~3000 words, PG-13): “Sherlock loves John’s tea, and knows it’s better than his own. What he doesn’t understand is why that’s so, and becomes determined to find out.”
  5. A Miracle of Rare Device (~3400 words, NC-17): “John and Sherlock have never ever thought about each other as anything more than friends. Sure, people speculate, but neither of them is looking for any kind of relationship. It is therefore quite the surprise when John sees Sherlock doing something he’s seen Sherlock do a thousand times before – drying his hands, drinking milk, anything commonplace—and all he can do is go over and give his roommate the most tender and loving kiss. Sherlock, who is just as surprised at his own reaction as John’s action, reciprocates.”
  6. A Different Kind of Roommate (3880 words, PG-13):  “Roommates are curious things. Curious in the way that no one ever really wants one initially, and yet they always have this knack of sticking around. And sometimes, they work their way into your life until you can’t imagine it without them.”
  7. Dating Lark (4005 words, PG-13): “Sherlock has the unnatural predisposition of being absolutely everyone’s worst date. Which doesn’t mean he wants to talk about it.”
  8. Sink Like a Stone (~4300 words, R): “After defeating Moriarty at the pool, life isn’t quite the same around 221B Baker Street…it’s more peaceful. And stranger.” Warning: amazing but definitely angsty and heartbreaking.
  9. Sherlock’s Bedside Comfort Class 101 (~4500 words, PG-13): “John becomes ill from an ill-advised swim in the Thames. In March. Cue Sherlock and his Bedside Comforts.”
  10. Five Things John Watson Will Never Tell Anyone and Five Things Sherlock Will Never Admit Out Loud (~6400 words total, R)
  11. Barter System (~7400 words, NC-17) Sherlock and John strike up a barter system involving their clothes.
  12. Alone on the Water (~8000 words, G): Sherlock discovers he has a month left to live, at the outside. I realize the premise isn’t particularly unique, but this fic is beautiful and absolutely heartbreaking. Warning: major character death, and make sure you have tissues at the ready.
  13. A Slowly Dawning Attraction (~13,700 words, PG-13): “Five times John and Sherlock nearly kissed at work, and one time they did.” I know there are tons of fics with that premise but this one is really good, I swear. Much better than the summary sounds.
  14. Your Words Are Gelignite (~14,000 words, PG-13): “Set precisely after TGG. Moriarty gives an ultimatum. Sherlock makes a confession and does what he must. John loses himself somewhere between truth and lie.”
  15. Let’s Make a Bed Out in the Rain (~18,000 words, R): “John is devastated after his long-term girlfriend leaves him. Sherlock helps him through it.”
  16. The Theory of Narrative Causality: “Sherlock is a well-known fanartist whose online antics always land him on fandom_wank. John’s a beloved BNF fanfiction author. They meet at a convention; geeky love ensues.” Meta-fic.
  17. Two Doctors, A Nurse, A Detective and A Scot, along with the rest of the series, The Joke is Better the Second Time, Third Time’s the Charm and I’ve Forgotten the Punchline (22,750 words total, PG-13): Absolutely wonderful, fluffy and occasionally sad Sherlock/Doctor Who crossover.
  18. Cu Sylvatica (~35,000, R): “After the events of the Great Game, Sherlock and John are called to assist the police on a murder investigation. Sherlock—convinced that the victim’s missing flatmate is the key to the investigation—finds himself unraveling a complex web of faked identity, kidnapping, and blackmail. All the while, he and John work to come to terms with the scar that Moriarty left on their lives and the possibility of his return. The difficulty is compounded by seemingly everyone in Sherlock’s life appearing to expect him to take Moriarty up on his offer of criminal partnership. The worst part is that Sherlock isn’t certain that they’re wrong.” Somewhat case-centric but wonderfully written and compelling.
  19. I Meet You There, And We Go: “Split perspective—Sherlock is both dying and keeping his bees.” This is the first part of a series of one-shots, all of which are fantastic.
  20.  The Paradox Series (NC-17, though not all the time): Easily my favorite fanfiction series. Ever. Wordstrings has both a beautiful writing style and a unique perspective on Sherlock’s character, and what it’s like inside his head. The relationship depicted here can be unsettling and isn’t exactly healthy, but it’s absolutely, 100% worth the read.
  21. The Road Less Traveled (~81,000 words, NC-17): “Sherlock realises that John’s dating habits involve an unacceptable level of risk… what if he meets an unusually tolerant woman and ends up getting married?”
  22. The Heart in the Whole (~109,000 words, NC-17): “Events after The Great Game leave Sherlock dependent on his best friend and colleague. But John has a secret of his own…”
